Transmission Flush 101
A transmission flush is simple: it’s something that is performed on a vehicle during certain maintenance intervals that helps to clean out sludge and grime that old transmission fluid leaves behind after time. This flush then primes the transmission system for fresh fluid, so that it can continue to operate the way it needs to without unnecessary build up slowing it down. As transmission fluid circulates throughout the system, it can collect dirt and dust and bits of foreign entities that interfere with a transmission’s ability to function. That, in turn, creates more heat and friction than necessary, which can alter and warp the parts of your vehicle’s transmission. That is why the flush is so important, it helps with the longevity of your transmission and all of its moving, heat-generating parts.
How Often Should Flushes Occur?
This is probably the most frequent question we get. How often does a transmission need to be flushed? While there isn’t a hard and fast rule for each and every vehicle on the road, the industry average is every 30,000 miles, or every two. That is why it’s imperative to make sure your vehicle is going through regular preventive maintenance on a yearly basis. That way, if something starts wearing down quicker than usual, your ASE-certified technician will spot it and be able to fix it before it becomes a greater issue. Sometimes, a flush is all that’s necessary to keep your car’s transmission running smoothly and safely. However, sometimes there are symptoms that pop up in between maintenance visits that require an urgent stop to our auto repair shop. Those symptoms include:
– Grinding sounds.
– Issues shifting gears.
– Vehicle surging.
– Delay in movement when depressing the gas pedal.
Transmissions are an engine’s buffer that protects it from undue or excessive strain. A malfunction in the transmission system that is left too long can ultimately cause cascading issues with a vehicle’s engine. That is why it is important to stay on top of transmission flushes. If all that sludge and dirt accumulation gets circulated enough, it has a chance to make its way into the engine itself. And if you think fixing up a transmission is difficult, just wait until it brings your vehicle’s engine into play.
